Our Humble Beginnings
Capasal Shampoo® was founded in 1965 by a husband and wife pharmacist duo, John and Mary Sampson. At the time, John suffered from severe dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. No over-the-counter shampoos seemed to help his itchy, flaky scalp.
As pharmacists, John and Mary knew they could develop a better therapeutic shampoo. After months of research and testing formulations, they created an effective coal tar solution shampoo. John’s scalp condition quickly improved after using it.
The Sampsons knew they had developed something special. They bottled up batches of the coal tar shampoo and started selling it at their local pharmacy in Manchester, England under the name Capasal®.
Word spread about this new medicated coal tar shampoo. People traveled from across the country to get bottles for themselves and their families. The demand grew rapidly.
In just a few short years, Capasal Shampoo® expanded from the Sampson’s community pharmacy to being stocked in pharmacies nationwide.
Growth & Innovation
Over the decades, Capasal Shampoo® has continued expanding. In the 1980s, we started exporting outside the UK to Ireland, Australia, and more. Today, Capasal® products are sold in over 15 countries worldwide.
While our original medicated formula is still our flagship product, we have innovated to offer a range of therapeutic shampoos.
In 2000, we introduced Capasal® Herbal Shampoo, a natural shampoo alternative with coconut oil, tea tree oil, and menthol. This provided a non-medicated coal tar option.
Our research and development team is always working on creating new products to help treat more scalp conditions. We recently developed a Capasal® Dry Scalp Shampoo and a Capasal® Sensitive Scalp Shampoo for itchy, irritated scalps.

Our original medicated formula contains 1% coal tar. Coal tar has antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-itch properties to help treat scalp conditions. The shampoo also contains salicylic acid to help soften and loosen dry, scaly buildup and reduce flakes.
